A new report says the state of Vermont spent almost $60 million on autism services in 2007.

The report by the state auditor’s office says that works out to about $60,000 per individual since there’s about one-thousand Vermonters with an autism spectrum disorder.

Still, those afflicted sometimes have trouble getting services because of where they live.

According to the report, the state Department of Education spent $27 million to provide services to 568 students with a disorder and the Agency of Human Services spent about $30 million on programs for autistic residents of all ages.
