The Vermont Department of Public Safety appears to be stepping up its enforcement against landlords whose properties are found to violate the Vermont housing code, following a court order saying it needed to do just that.

Franklin Superior Court Judge Ben Joseph scolded the department in August, saying state inspectors had collected just three fines for 4,000 building code violations found between 2002 and 2008.

In September and October of this year, though, the DPS Division of Fire Safety issued 18 fines for building code violations.

The court case began with Legal Aid taking action over a run-down apartment building in St. Albans in 2002.
