The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife hopes to issue more than a thousand moose hunting permits for this October’s hunt. The permits are awarded by lottery.

State moose biologist Cedric Alexander says the goal is to reduce the moose population in parts of the Northeast Kingdom from about 2,400 to 1,400. The moose are overbrowsing the area and hurting the forests and other species.

Last year the state issued 833 moose permits.
