The state of Vermont is trying to shut down a Milton junkyard.

The Vermont Attorney General’s Office filed paperwork Tuesday seeking a court order to get ABC Metals Recycling to stop accepting material.

The Burlington Free Press says the owners of the junkyard, Gilbert and Blanche Rhoades, have operated it since 1970 but court papers say approvals for salvage yard lapsed starting in 2001.

Neighbors want it to close, citing concerns about groundwater contamination and noise.

Following a public hearing, the Milton Selectboard denied the owners permits to continue operating in 2008. The owners appealed but a Superior Court judge sided with the Selectboard on Oct. 6.
