State works to collect back income taxes

The state of Vermont is cracking down on people who owe back income taxes in hopes of collecting at least $7 million.

Tax Commissioner Tom Pelham says 760 people have received letters in the past few weeks informing them that it appears they never paid their 2003 state income tax.

More letters will be sent, but the state is first targeting the people who owe the most money, and the year 2003 was selected because the statute of limitations has expired on earlier years.

The back taxes collected will help pay for a new computer system for the Department of Taxes.
