Suit threatened over campaign finance ruling

Anthony Pollina is striking a conciliatory tone over demands from two top state officials that he return some of the money he’s raised to his campaign donors.

But some of his supporters are threatening to sue.

Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz and the office of Attorney General William Sorrell, both Democrats, say the independent gubernatorial candidate may have violated Vermont’s campaign finance law by accepting donations of more than $1,000 for his gubernatorial campaign.

Burlington lawyer John Franco says he’s been in talks with some Pollina donors who believe limiting independent candidates to $1,000 donations while those affiliated with parties can raise $2,000 per election cycle from each donor is unfair.
