Supreme Court reviews property tax calculation

Vermont Supreme Court justices are being asked to decide a dispute about how the statewide property tax is figured. They’ve been asked to review Rutland Superior Judge William Cohen’s decision that the property tax equalization system is unreliable.

Attorney General William Sorrell says he believes the provision of the Act 60 education funding law is fair. But Killington, which filed the case to begin with, argued that the state doesn’t follow proper statistical analysis in coming up with its numbers.

Cohen agreed with that conclusion and ordered the state to recalculate the grand list for Killington for 1997.
