Survey: Little difference between lottery and non-lottery players

A new survey shows that half of all Vermont lottery players attended college, most graduated and some hold higher degrees.

The 2008 Player Demographics Study also indicates that the average household income for lottery players is about $50,000.

About 12 percent of lottery players have an income of less than $20,000 and another 12 percent make more than $95,000.

The average age of players is 54, and a bit more women play than men.

The survey was conducted in February by the Center for Research and Public Policy. It interviewed nearly 2,000 Vermonters. Just over  40 percent said they play the lottery.

Researcher Jerry Lindsley says the results show little demographic difference between Vermonters who play the lottery and those who don’t.

Lottery Commission Vice Chair Arthur Ristau says the results debunk the theory that the lottery is predatory towards low-income, less-educated Vermonters.
