Officials at the Vermont Health Department say they’re not surprised by a new report that says the state has one of the highest rates of illegal drug use in the country.

A nationwide survey of 68,000 people done in 2002, found that Washington, D.C. led the nation with 12.4 percent of the those surveyed admitting they had used illegal drugs in the previous month. New Hampshire was third in the survey and Vermont was fourth, with 11 percent of respondents saying they had used illegal drugs in the previous month.

A Vermont Health Department official says the new survey results are in line with earlier studies.
