A man wounded in a gunfight with a Vermont State Police trooper is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of attempted murder today.

John Walters, 51, of Proctor, was hospitalized in New Hampshire following the Nov. 19 shootout at his home with Sgt. Thomas Mozzer of the Vermont State Police. Authorities say Mozzer was not hit; Walters was wounded in the chest, arm and legs.

The incident began when Mozzer responded to a call by Walters’ wife, who said he was depressed and drinking and that she was afraid he was going to leave on his motorcycle.

Walters, who waived extradition from New Hampshire, was tentatively scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Vermont District Court.
