Swanton bridge expense debated

Questions are being raised about a $2 million plan to turn an old bridge from Milton into a refurbished span for bikes and pedestrians across the Missisquoi River in Swanton.

A former lawmaker from Swantons, John Winters, has been trying to stop the project, saying it is too costly, given Vermont’s other road and bridge woes.

But current lawmakers and state officials say to stop the project, the state would have to pay back to the federal government $3 million in aid it got for the new bridge in Milton.
