Symington says gas tax one option for fixing roads, bridges

House Speaker Gaye Symington says the state’s roads and bridges are in a "state of crisis" and says the Legislature needs to focus on ways to pay for their repairs.

But she is denying Republican allegations that she is considering increasing the gas tax to pay for the work.

House Minority Leader Steve Adams says any increase in the gas tax would hurt low-to-moderate income Vermonters already struggling with high gas prices and other rising costs.

He supports a Vermont Agency of Transportation proposal to use existing state revenue to fix or replace some of the old infrastructure.

Symington and other Democrats say increasing the gas tax is just one of the options that should be considered.
