Authorities say vandals broke into a Catholic church in Graniteville, knocked over a row of lit candles and made off with religious artifacts.

Police say the incident at St. Sylvester Church occurred either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, when someone apparently forced their way in.

Rev. Leo Bilodeau says the gold-plated tabernacle – which holds consecrated bread, and chalices – was stolen after someone broke a wooden enclosure that held it in place.

Barre Town police say they have "quite a few leads" on who may be responsible.

Bishop Salvatore Matano, the bishop of the statewide Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, will say a special Mass of reparation and rededication at the church on Sunday.
