Police say a teenager defaced the Bennington Battle Monument and he’s facing two felony charges.

Eighteen-year-old David Cowan was arraigned yesterday in Vermont District Court in Bennington. He pleaded not guilty to unlawful mischief greater than one-thousand-dollars and injuring or destroying a grave or historical marker. Both charges carry a five-year penalty.

State’s Attorney Erica Marthage says Cowan violated two statutes when he allegedly spray-painted graffiti on the 306-foot monument February 14th.

A 17-year-old boy said Cowan stole a can of spray paint from a Wal-Mart and defaced the monument.

The damage was estimated at $1,600.
