Tenants sue over contaminated water

Former tenants of a Castleton apartment complex who sued over contamination in their water supply are finally getting their day in court – more than 10 years late.

A trial began Wednesday in Rutland Superior Court that pits them against the owners of the Parsons Hill apartments, who allegedly concealed the presence of tetrachloroethylene, a carcinogen known as PCE.

Plaintiffs attorney Jack Welch told jurors the tenants drank, bathed in and inhaled fumes from contaminated water because the apartment’s owners hid the truth from them, despite state recommendations that the water not be used.

The owners say they were as ignorant of the health risks as the tenants were.
