Vermont is not exactly known as a caving mecca. There are only 150 known caves in the state.  Compare that with Missouri, which has 6,000 or Tennessee, with a whopping 14,000!

Vermont caves tend to be cold, wet and small but our best caves are beautiful with banding, stripes and minerals.  And when the weather is hot and muggy outside, maybe a cool dark cave doesn’t sound so bad.

This year the national Speleological convention is being held in Vermont at the beginning of August.  Speleology is the scientific study of caves.

Peter Youngbaer is president of the Vermont Cavers’ Association.  He spoke with  VPR’s Jane Lindholm about what drives people to cave.
