Tight budgets could squeeze some bus and train service in Vermont at a time when the demand for public transportation is on the rise in some parts of state.

Greyhound, the owner of the Vermont Transit line, cancelled service to Rutland two weeks ago.

Concerns also are being raised about Amtrak train service as transportation revenues fall and the number of highway and bridge repair projects are on the rise.

David Dill, secretary of the state Agency of Transportation, says the agency is having to make tough choices to adjust the budget for 2009. He says he understands the need for public transit but the challenges of being able to fund bus and rail service in a rural state are much more difficult.
