TransCanada still working on Bellows Falls dam

Workers are still trying to repair a gate on a Connecticut River hydroelectric dam that had been stuck open for the last two weeks.

A spokeswoman for dam owner TransCanada says workers were performing routine maintenance on the dam between Bellows Falls, Vermont and Walpole, New Hampshire two weeks ago when it became jammed open.

Water levels in the river above the dam have fallen about three feet and there are concerns the low water could hurt the environment.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says the raised gate poses no threat to public safety and the level of the reservoir above the dam is still within the dam’s permit.

TransCanada spokeswoman Kiersten Tucker says technicians are working diligently to fix the gate.
