Transgender youth wants genderless bathrooms

A transgendered South Burlington High School senior is asking the Vermont Human Rights Commission to back an effort to require the state’s middle and high schools to offer genderless bathrooms.

Sixteen-year-old Kyle Giard-Chase told the commission Thursday that until a year ago he was a three-sport athlete and the co-captain of the field hockey team.

Kyle told the commissioners how he had been verbally harassed and physically threatened at an away game for entering the girl’s restroom.

Kyle says gender neutral bathrooms can be as simple as one room bathrooms available to either sex.

The commission didn’t take any action, but some members felt the cost of single-sex bathrooms could be prohibitive for some schools.
