Transportation officials to survey Champlain Bridge traffic

Traffic experts have a few questions for you if you drive the Lake Champlain-Crown Point Bridge.

So they’ll be out with clipboards in hand this weekend, interviewing drivers.

New York and Vermont are planning to repair or replace the historic span across the southern end of Lake Champlain.

They’d like to know from people who use the bridge where they started their trip and where they’re headed. They also want to know how often drivers travel across the bridge.

That will help traffic engineers figure out design alternatives for replacing or rebuilding the bridge. And, it will also help determine possible detours for when construction gets under way in 2013.

The bridge is currently reduced to one lane of traffic because of its condition, so drivers have to stop at either end for a traffic light.

On Saturday, from 7 in the morning until 8 at night, motorists will be asked about their driving habits. Another survey will be taken next Wednesday.
