New York State Police say they’re cracking down this week on drivers who use hand-held cell phones while driving on the Thruway.

Troop T, the agency’s Thruway detail, is launching its four-day "Operation Hang UP II" on Monday. Officials say the enforcement of the state law prohibiting hand-held cell phone use while driving will be conducted through Thursday.

State police say they issued more than 5,400 tickets last year to motorists caught violating the cell-phone law on the Thruway. A Troop T enforcement initiative launched in April resulted in 816 tickets being written over a four-day span.

Drivers caught breaking the law face a maximum fine of $100, along with a mandatory $60 surcharge.
