A federal jury has found two men guilty of helping tax protesters Ed and Elaine Brown evade arrest last year. Deliberations will continue today in the case of a third defendant.

Jason Gerhard of Brookhaven, New York, and Daniel Riley of Cohoes, New York, were found guilty yesterday of conspiring to prevent U.S. marshals from arresting the Browns. The two men were also convicted of aiding and abetting, and bringing guns to help prolong a standoff with authorities.

Riley was found guilty of handling explosive devices. Gerhard was acquitted of that charge.

The jury hasn’t yet reached a verdict in the case of Cirino Gonzalez of Alice, Texas, who also is charged with conspiracy, aiding and abetting, and a weapons violation.

Defense lawyers argued that while the men visited the Browns and shared some of their views, they did not conspire together.

The Browns were arrested in October after a nearly nine-month standoff at their Plainfield home. They refused to surrender to authorities following convictions for not paying federal income taxes.
