Two Montpelier runners lose bid to run for U-32

Two high school athletes who sought permission to run for another school because theirs doesn’t have a cross-country team have lost their bid to do so.

A Vermont Principals Association committee has voted 4-1 against letting the two Montpelier High School cross-country runners compete on the U-32 high school team.

The VPA’s "member to member” program allows athletes to play team sports for other schools.

But under existing rules, athletes can compete for other schools in team sports like football, field hockey, basketball, ice hockey, tennis, softball or baseball, but not individual sports cross-country running, gymnastics, skiing, golf and track.

One sticking point was that athletes from outside a school can comprise no more than 20 percent of the roster. U-32’s cross-country team has only six boys; it would need 18 total to have two outside athletes.
