The cook from the nuclear attack submarine, the USS Montpelier, is getting some specialized training in its namesake city. Navy Specialist Dedrick Sullivan is spending two weeks at the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier.

He’s learning some haute cuisine that he can take back to his crew when he rejoins the sub in the Persian Gulf. Sullivan says he hopes to cook up something special for his shipmates.

The culinary institute offered Sullivan the course free of charge. Institute President Fran Voight says the gift is the institute’s way of contributing something to the community. Sullivan says he hopes the training will enable him to cook meals that are flavorful and “comforting.”
