The University of Vermont College of Medicine is honoring a longtime professor of neonatology with an endowed chair.

The $2 million chair honoring Dr. Jerold Lucey was established through a lead gift from the Vermont Oxford Network.

The endowment aims to promote advances in the care of newborn infants and their families through research, education and improving the quality of care.

Lucey joined the UVM faculty in 1956. He established the state’s first neonatal unit and pioneered several innovations in the care of premature infants.

The first physician to hold the Lucey chair is Dr. Jeffrey Horbar, a professor of pediatrics.
