The University of Vermont’s budget troubles have worsened with news that the school will likely face an $11 million state funding cut in the next two years.

UVM expects a $6 million reduction in its state appropriation this year and $5 million next year, in the wake of falling state revenues. The cuts will likely affect the College of Medicine and the Extension.

The news comes as the school plans layoffs, salary freezes, program cuts and other cost-cutting measures to make up for an anticipated $22 million budget shortfall.

University spokesman Enrique Corredera says the layoffs are expected to be "in the dozens, not hundreds."
