If the popular image of older Americans was set in stone by the ArchieBunker character from the TV show "All in the Family" as a rigid, evenbigoted person set in their ways and afraid of change, a new survey suggests it might be time to change the channel.

Working with data compiled between 1972 and 2004 from the National Opinion Research Center, University of Vermont Professor of Sociology Nick Danigelis and colleagues dug deeper into how Americans’ perceptions and opinions change — or don’t– as they grow older.

Danigelis speaks with VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb about the study.
