VELCO seeks help on power line upgrade

Charlotte is being asked to play more of a role in a major upgrade of electric transmission lines serving northwestern Vermont.

Residents of the town were successful in persuading the Public Service Board to order that some of the new Vermont Electric Power Company lines be buried.

But most of them will be overhead lines carried on poles.

So VELCO is looking for a place to set up its construction staging area. Officials say between 400 and 500 poles will be stored on the site during the construction of the new line.

The Charlotte Select Board is scheduled to hold a special meeting tonight to decide whether the staging area will be permitted on private land.
