Verizon to expand cell service in Adirondacks

Verizon Wireless says it will activate at least ten new cell sites in the Adirondack region this year, bringing the total to more than 90.

The company says it also plans to continue efforts to bring coverage to the Northway corridor. It has activated four of its planned 13 new sites along a previously uncovered stretch of Interstate 87.

The Northway cell sites will fill a nearly 50-mile service gap along a remote stretch of the highway that connects Albany and Montreal.

A Brooklyn man crashed and froze to death in January 2007 along the highway in the so-called "dark zone" in North Hudson, unable to call for help.
