The Vermont Air National Guard will be the first unit in the country to help train regular active duty air force personnel. Officials formally announced on Thursday the program that will have up to 200 Air Force personnel working and flying out of the base at the Burlington International Airport.

Major General Martha Rainville says the goal is to help train green air force technicians and pilots alongside experienced National Guard airmen. Unlike active duty personnel at traditional military bases where the military provides services like housing and health care, those assigned to Vermont’s 158th Fighter Wing would live among civilians, a test approach called “community basing.”
