Vermont car sales better than the national trend

Slumping sales that have hit the automobile industry nationally this summer haven’t been as big a problem in Vermont.

The Vermont Automobile Dealers Association says things have picked up in the last couple of months following a sluggish start to 2007.

Nationally, July was a tough month for dealers. General Motors reported sales down 22% from the same period last year, while Ford was down 19% and Daimler-Chrysler 9%.

But Vermont continued to rebound from the first part of the year, when car sales statewide plunged 16.6% and light truck sales were off 10.1%.
