Some Vermont institutions of higher education are re-examining security procedures following the massacre at Virginia Tech.

At Middlebury College, officials are exploring the idea of installing a tower-mounted siren or some other public warning system to alert the campus to an emergency.

John Emerson, Dean of Planning at the college, says students, faculty and staff would be instructed that when such an alarm sounds, they should check e-mail or for a cell phone text message saying what the problem is.

At the University of Vermont, officials are planning a text-message system that would alert people to emergencies.
