Vermont considers decriminalizing teen ‘sexting’

Vermont senators say they don’t want to condone teen ‘sexting’ – the sending of explicit photos and messages via cell phones.

But they also don’t want kids who engage in the practice to be subject to the state’s child pornography laws and end up on the state’s sex offender registry.

That’s the idea behind legislation that has passed the Senate and is now in the House that would carve out an exemption from the child pornography statute for teenagers who voluntarily share racy photos of themselves via cell phones.

The measure comes in response to prosecutions around the country of young people who have been caught sharing explicit photos of themselves via cell phone.
