Vermont courts’ reduction seen smaller

Vermont judiciary leaders say cutbacks to the state’s court system won’t be as deep as initially feared, at least not right away.

The Judicial Branch was originally targeted for $2.4 million in reductions as part of a $20 million round of budget cuts in Montpelier. But the number has been reduced to $245,000 for now. More cuts could be proposed when the Legislature convenes next month.

Vermont Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Reiber says he’s examining the courts’ $32 million annual budget. And Reiber says stability in the court system is critical for Vermonters.
