Vermont delegation takes no comfort in Patraeus testimony

The three members of Vermont’s delegation in Washington say they’re taking no comfort from testimony offered on Capitol Hill yesterday by the top U.S. military commanders in Iraq.

General David Patraeus told a congressional hearing that hard-won gains in the war zone are too fragile to promise any troop pullouts beyond this summer.

Senator Patrick Leahy says the troop escalation started last year has failed to achieve its central goal of keeping violence in Iraq under control.

Senator Bernie Sanders says the war remains a disaster in his estimation, and that U.S. troops should come home as soon as possible.

Congressman Peter Welch says Patraeus and President Bush have yet to describe what a path to political reconciliation in Iraq might look like.
