Montreal residents have had a difficult few days dealing with news a fatal police shooting of a teenager this past weekend, and rioting that happened in the wake of that shooting.

A group of teenagers was hanging out in a park in the ethnically diverse area of Montreal North on Saturday evening when an altercation between one of them and two police officers culminated in the shooting. Police won’t comment on an ongoing investigation, but witnesses have been critical of police actions and the story has raised allegations of racial profiling.

There are many unanswered questions and conflicting accounts of what led to the death of 18-year-old Fredy Villaneuva and the arrest of his brother Dany Villaneuva. Montreal Gazette reporter Chris Maughan speaks with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about the shooting.
