(Host) Planners in four regions of Vermont have won federal money that they say should help them redevelop old industrial sites.

The Environmental Protection Agency officially made the award of one million dollars at an event in Waterbury this morning.

Vermont Natural Resources Secretary George Crombie says the money should help boost the state’s economy.

(Crombie) "I think that’s a huge opportunity for Vermont. What it allows is the rejuvenation of buildings in our center cores and keep business in the downtown areas.”

(Host) The money is going to four regional planning commissions that work in Bennington, Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Windsor counties.

The goal of the program is to help communities clean up contamination or pollution at an old industrial site and then redevelop it.

Crombie says the awards to Vermont could help create housing or new businesses.
