An official says the state of Vermont received a check for $318,963 yesterday as its part of a nationwide settlement with drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Nationally, the company paid a total of $515 million.

Several states and Department of Justice accused the company of inflating prescription drug prices, illegally paying health care providers to use its products, and promoting the unapproved use of an anti-psychotic drug.

The September settlement involved the Department of Justice and the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Units.

Vermont Medicaid fraud chief Linda Purdy says the case sends a message to other pharmaceutical companies that the government will not tolerate drug companies engaging in potentially dangerous marketing efforts.
