These are tough economic times, but Vermonters are still doing a good job keeping up with their mortgages.

A recent report found that Vermont had the fourth lowest rate in the country of people who are two months behind in their mortgages.

A report by the credit reporting agency TransUnion says the percentage of people behind on their mortgages shot up in the third quarter from the same period last year.

Nationally, 3.96 percent of people holding a mortgage were at least 60 days behind in payments. That compares with 2.56 percent in the third quarter of 2007.

The highest delinquency rates continue to be in Florida, followed by Nevada, California and Arizona.

The states with the lowest delinquency rates were North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and then Vermont.
