Vermont school wants to remove historic barn

A Vermont school wants to remove a run-down barn from its property, but the 100-year-old-plus building has historic value.

The Northshire Day School wants the town of Manchester to support its request to remove the barn and build a new structure, rather than try to renovate it at a potentially high cost.

The barn was part of a property donated in 2004 to allow the day school to move to its present location.

Manchester Planning Director and Zoning Administrator Lee Krohn told the Rutland Herald he believed board members were sympathetic to the school’s situation.

Environmental commission coordinator Warren Foster said the barn is listed on the Vermont historic structures survey. In 2004, school officials expressed a commitment to preserve it.

The local development review board plans to visit the site Thursday.
