The Vermont Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would make seed manufacturers, rather than farmers, liable for damages from genetically modified crops. But an amendment is expected early next week that, if passed, could dramatically change the bill.
Today the Senate approved a bill that would help farmers recover losses from the accidental spread of genetically modified crops. The bill places so called “strict liability” on the seed manufacturers. Opponents say strict liability is inappropriate for GMOs.
Agriculture Secretary, Steve Kerr, says he will recommend that the governor veto the bill if it is passed in its current form.
