Vermont senators to be unseated as committee chairs

Republicans Tuesday morning appear headed to win control of both the U.S. House and the Senate in Washington. And that spells trouble for Vermont’s two senators.

Democrat Patrick Leahy chairs the powerful Judiciary Committee. The committee under Leahy’s leadership has drawn criticism from the Bush administration for rejecting several conservative judges. Leahy will lose the chairmanship when the Republicans take control of the Senate.

And Independent Senator James Jeffords has been a target of the GOP ever since he changed parties 18 months ago and shifted the Senate’s balance of power. Jeffords is now chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. Republicans will waste no time taking that chairmanship away from him when they take control of the Senate.
