Vermont state offices will be open Friday

Vermont state workers are expected to show up for work Friday, though federal offices will be closed to remember former president Ronald Reagan. President Bush has declared a national day of mourning for the day of Reagan’s funeral. All federal offices and major financial markets will be closed.

But Vermont is taking a more fiscally conservative approach to the occasion. A psokesman for Governor Jim Douglas says it would cost Vermont about $1.5 million to give about 7,500 state workers a paid vacation day on Friday.

The Douglas administration is looking at other ways to honor Reagan, such as encouraging a statewide moment of silence.
