Vermont Transportation Agency to reconsider train car purchase

The Vermont Agency of Transportation is going to reconsider a plan to buy small, self-propelled train cars that would be used on one of the state’s Amtrak passenger routes.

Six months ago the agency shelved plans to buy the cars when it couldn’t get an assurance from manufacturer Colorado Rail that it would buy the cars back after three years if the plan didn’t work as hoped.

Transportation Secretary Neale Lunderville says the state wants to move forward.

Amtrak wants Vermont to become a test location for the cars and had offered the state $2 million to help pay for a maintenance facility and marketing.

It would cost $17.5 million over 20 years for three diesel-power cars with seating and two passenger cars.
