Hearings are under way by federal regulators about whether the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant should be allowed to operate until 2032.

An informational open house was conducted yesterday and the Nuclear Regulatory commission is having public hearings today.

Federal officials say it probably will take up to two-and-a-half years to consider whether Yankee’s license should be extended by another 20 years.

Staff for the commission are trying to determine now what the scope of their upcoming review should be.

The commission has a list of 92 environmental issues that it has to determine how to evaluate on Yankee’s application.
