Stratton Mountain’s Lindsey Jacobellis took the Olympic silver medal in the new “snowboardcross” event today after a surprise fall that cost her the gold.

Jacobellis survived an early bumping and then was well ahead of the other finalists by dozens of yards.

But as she neared the finish line, Jacobellis grabbed her board while she was airborne and then fell.

Switzerland’s Tanja Frieden then sped by her to win the gold medal.

Jacobellis scrambled back onto her board after sliding off the marked course and made it across the finish line for the silver.

Canadian Dominique Maltais took the bronze.
