Vermont’s baby haven law used only once

State officials say Vermont‘s baby safe haven law has been used once since the law went into effect last year.

But it wasn’t a typical case where a mother drops off a baby that might otherwise have been abandoned.

Cindy Walcott of the Department of Children and Families says the mother gave birth in a hospital this spring and then left the child there when she realized she couldn’t take care of it.

The baby will be put up for adoption.

The "baby safe haven” law was designed for a desperate mother who might otherwise have left her unattended. The child can be turned over without fear of prosecution to someone working for a hospital, fire department or adoption agency.
