Vermont’s bat population experiences dramatic decline

Vermont Fish and Wildlife biologists continue to see dramatic losses in bat numbers.

A disease known as white nose syndrome has affected the bat population in the Northeast, and as far south as Virginia.

Biologists now say they have seen a near complete devastation of the bat population at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford.

The population at the mine has been studied since 2002.

As recently as 2006, over 950 bats were captured in a 3-hour survey.  Two weeks ago, only one bat was captured.

One wildlife observer called the near-absence of bats "astounding".

Biologist Scott Darling says the Elizabeth Mine survey results should be seen as a "wake-up call".

Darling warns that the disease needs to be immediately addressed on a national level.
