Vermont’s carbon emissions lowest in country

With no coal-burning power plants, Vermont has the lowest total emissions of carbon dioxide of any state in the country.

But per capita, Vermont is second-lowest, behind hydropower-rich Idaho.

Those findings come from a new Associated Press ranking of states and their emissions of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas blamed for global climate change.

Idaho’s next-door neighbor Wyoming is the highest per-capita emitter of carbon dioxide in the country.

Wyoming is a big coal state, and use of coal to make electricity appears to be the biggest factor in determining a state’s carbon emissions.
