Vermont’s cigarette tax is going up, but it wouldn’t be wise to try to duck it by going to New York state to buy smokes.

Vermont’s cigarette tax goes up to a $1.99 a pack effective July 1, and it will rank 11th in the country in what it levies for a pack.

But New York state is raising its cigarette tax by $1.25, which is expected to push the average price of a pack of cigarettes in the Empire State to about $6.40.

New York will rank first in the country for having the stiffest cigarette tax.

New Hampshire, meanwhile, charges $1.08 per pack in taxes, and ranks 24th in the country.
